Horror Movies and True Stories

When you see the words ‘Based on a true story’ in horror flicks, does it send chills down the spine? What will be your reaction when you come to know there are some real incidents that happened in the sets of horror films too? Also, some non-horror movie sets were believed to be cursed as well. Here is a list of these movies –

1. Batman (2008)

A surprise entry in the list, isn’t it? Though not a horror flick, this movie was set to be cursed and faced a lot of problems. The Batman series itself had many incidents. Heath Ledger, who played the Joker in The Dark Knight had suffered depression during the filming. He used to sleep only two hours a night.

He had a diary which he used to prepare for the role, and the final page had the words ‘Bye-Bye’ after which he said to have committed suicide. Another incident on the stunt involves a technician who died while filming a stunt sequence. The ‘Batman Curse’ continued to Morgan Freeman as well who met with a serious car accident and had been divorced too during this period.

2. The Conjuring (2013)

This movie is told to be based on a true story. There are several incidents that happened during the making of this movie. When the crew and the family around which the movie was made were on the set, strange strong winds swirled around them. The trees nearby were not moving but there were winds blowing around in the set. Carolyn, an actor felt a strong presence of evil in her room and also fainted there. The hotel in which the crew was staying also caught fire and all had to evacuate from there.

The film director James Wan, while working on this script at his office late at night suddenly recalls his dog shouting over, but he was not able to find anything that could disturb the dog over there. Also, Vera Farmiga, who played paranormal investigator in the film refused to take the script of the movie home as it made her feel uneasy. She also felt paralyzed when she tried to read the script at night.

3. The Matrix (1999)

Though not a ghost movie, after the movie release several incidents happened to the cast and crew of the movie. The film’s star Keanu Reeve's girlfriend gave birth to a stillborn baby after the movie. Not just that, this led to their break-up and also, she died soon after in a plane crash.

Reeves himself met with a motorbike accident and was hospitalized for several days. His sister also suffered from leukemia. Another actor in the movie, Gloria Foster too died within a year. All these were termed as ‘The Matrix curse’ at that time.

4. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

One of the best horror films ever made, this movie directed by Roman Polanski is about a confused mother who is expecting her first child. More disturbing than the movie is the chain of events that happened after its release. The music composer of the film died of brain clot exactly the same way how one of the characters in the movie died. More horrific than this is that Roman’s wife Sharon Tate was murdered along with four others in their home in Los Angeles.

The mass murder was one of the iconic scenes in the film. In the murder scene, the killer had written the word ‘PIG’ on the front door. The producer of the movie believed that the movie was cursed after the scene in which the dialogue ‘Rosemary, for God’s sake drop that knife’ scene was shot and he himself became deadly ill of uremic poisoning after the film was made.

5. The Exorcist (1973)

One of the classics in the horror genre, Exorcist is about a young girl who is possessed by an evil ghost and the priest who tries to exorcise her out from it forms the crux of the story. This film had several nerve-chilling incidents that happened during the making as well. The film’s entire set was damaged due to unexpected fire on the sets. Luckily none of the crew members were on the set during the mishap, but till now the origin of the fire is unknown.

Film’s lead actor Jack McGowan died just a few weeks before the release of the film. Linda Blair, one of the actors in the movie got injured badly during the filming of one of her scenes. The director William Fiendkin did bring in priests to the sets but was futile. The ‘Exorcist’s curse’ remained throughout.
